The Battle Institute is a battle facility in Nimbasa City in Unova, Lumiose City in Kalos and Mauville City in Hoenn (in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire only). Its purpose is to analyse the player's battling skill, by completing five battles in succession, either Single or Double battles. It can only be played once the player has defeated the Champion.

Restrictions[]

Similar to previous battling facilities like Battle Tower and Battle Subway, there are restrictions in Battle Institute battles.

  • Pokémon above and below level 50 will be set to level 50.
  • The player cannot use items from the bag. Held items can still be used, and they are restored after the end of the battle.
  • Battling does not affect Pokémon's EVs and Experience Points, and battling against unseen Pokémon will not add to the Pokédex.

In addition, the following Pokémon are not allowed:

Battling[]

There are always five battles faced in a row, known as a Battle Test. The battles get harder, starting with Pokémon that are not yet fully evolved and ending potentially with Legendary Pokémon. The sets used are the same as the ones that appear in the Battle Subway or the Battle Maison, depending on the generation.

Scoring[]

Points are awarded using the following method:

  • +1000 points per battle won
  • +80 points for each opposing Pokémon fainting
  • -80 points for each of the player's Pokémon fainting
  • +15 points each time the player's Pokémon uses one of its moves that it hasn't already used in the current battle
  • +5 points each time the player directly switches Pokémon
  • +1 point for each time the player hits an opponent with an attack that's super-effective
  • -2 points for each time the player hits an opponent with an attack that's not very effective
  • -10 points for each time the player uses a move that "doesn't affect" an opponent (from type chart immunities only)
  • +2 points for each time an opponent hits one of the player's Pokémon with an attack that's not very effective
  • +5 points for each time an opponent uses a move that "doesn't affect" the player's Pokémon
  • -10 points for each turn that passes (if a battle is forfeited at the beginning of a turn, the cost of that turn is still counted)
  • Between -0 and -100 points per battle depending on how much HP the player's Pokémon are missing at the end of the battle, as a percentage of the combined maximum HP of all team members

The player is ranked based on their overall score, and in Generation 6 games only, they receive an item and Battle Points as well.
