A Village Homecoming! (Japanese: アイリス、竜の里へ帰る!, HepburnIris Returns to the Village of Dragons!) is the 3rd episode of Pokémon: BW Adventures in Unova and Beyond.

Synopsis[]

As our heroes excitedly arrive at Iris’s hometown, the Village of Dragons, they run into her childhood friend Shannon and the two Zweilous she’s been raising. Iris makes plans to meet up with Shannon later and tell her friend all about her journey, but first she needs to visit the Village Elder.

The Elder warmly welcomes Iris home and, after a quick examination, declares that she’s been taking good care of Axew. Some of the other villagers want to see the rest of Iris’s Pokémon, and Iris calls Dragonite to come out. Everyone oohs and ahhs over this impressive catch—at least, until Dragonite picks a fight with a nearby Haxorus! But amazingly, a few gentle words from the Elder calm them both down.

Then it’s off to Shannon’s house for lunch, where Iris suggests that she join our heroes on their journey! Shannon mentions that she’d been planning to start a journey after both of her Zweilous evolve, but she’s not sure she has the talent for that. She’s decided to become a Pokémon Breeder, and thinks she’s better off staying home and working on that goal.

As our heroes attempt to convince her a journey would be a wonderful opportunity, they hear the frantic cries of one of the Zweilous outside. They rush to investigate, and discover that the older Zweilous is evolving into Hydreigon! It’s an exciting moment—one that is quickly disturbed as it becomes clear that Hydreigon’s sudden Evolution has thrown it into a state of panic and confusion. It goes on a rampage, attacking everything in sight! Iris remembers how the Elder calmed her Dragonite and springs into action.

With the help of all her Pokémon, she manages to back Hydreigon into a corner where she can get close to it. It’s a difficult task indeed, but Iris hangs in there, speaking calm words of reassurance and encouragement. And her patience pays off, because she succeeds and Hydreigon calms down, much to everyone’s amazement!

The Village Elder, who’s been watching, comes up to congratulate Iris on her victory—and so does Gym Leader Drayden, Iris’s old teacher! She’s been trying to avoid him because she feels bad about leaving school, but he compliments her growth and challenges her to come to the Opelucid Gym for a battle with him. And so, the next stop on our heroes’ journey is decided![1]

Episode plot[]

Ash, Cilan and Iris continue on when Iris sees the Village of Dragons is beyond a hill. She speeds up, wanting to see her hometown instead of going to Opelucid City to meet Drayden, thinking he is a pain. The heroes come to the village. As Ash and Cilan admire the Dragon-type Pokémon, Iris meets up with Shannon and introduces her to Ash and Cilan, as Shannon is an old friend of Iris. As Iris talks with Shannon, two Zweilous appear. Shannon replies these are her own, who hatched from eggs and behave as brothers towards each other. The heroes walk to the elder's house. Iris greets the elder, who is delighted to see her, as well as her friends. She thanks Cilan and Ash for taking care of her, but Ash states she takes care of herself mostly and in response to the elder asking if Iris caused them trouble, he says not too much, much to Iris' anger.

Elder tells them Iris has always been a free spirit, embarrassing Iris. Her Axew comes to the elder and she takes a closer look. The elder tells Iris that she has raised Axew well. The elder's boys ask Iris if she have any other Pokémon. Iris goes out and sends Dragonite, amazing the elder. However, Dragonite sees a Haxorus resting nearby and picks a fight with it. They bash each other, despite Iris' demands to stop. The elder comes between them, causing Dragonite to miss and fall down. The elder clams Haxorus down, then pats Dragonite's belly, pushing it back and calming it down as well. The elder thanks Dragonite for not attacking her, knowing how strong it became. Iris calls Dragonite back, amazing Cilan and Ash for the elder's knowledge.

Ash asks about the Village of Dragons. Iris decides to tell him, but they go to Shannon's house first. The elder tells a man behind trees Iris still thinks she ran away from him, but the man replies he wants to see what she learned and gained from that. The heroes come to Shannon, who is worried about Zweilous, for one of them has become ill. Still, Shannon gives them some cheese sandwiches for lunch. Ash and Cilan admit they love the country life, mixing good food with fresh air. Shannon still wishes she could go on a journey, but Iris proposes she could go with them, as a Breeder. Iris makes her remember the times they wanted to know what life was outside the village. Shannon replies she does not have the talent Iris does: to talk with dragons.

Cilan and Ash tell Shannon she is doing well as a Breeder and could gain a lot of experience by going out. Shannon decides that she will ask the elder to go out when once her Zweilous evolve into Hydreigon. Suddenly, they hear Zweilous calling out to them, sounding worried. They rush to the lake and see the other Zweilous is evolving into a Hydreigon. Hydreigon looks at its reflection in the lake and becomes upset, launching a Draco Meteor into the sky. Shannon tries to calm down Hydreigon, but it blows her away with a gust from its wings. Zweilous jumps up to attack Hydreigon with Double Hit, but Hydreigon uses Dragon Rush to knock Zweilous back. The heroes see that Hydreigon is freaking out because it evolved so suddenly and drastically. Remembering how the elder calmed Dragonite down, Iris decides do the same to Hydreigon. She sends out Emolga and Dragonite, who fly up to Hydreigon and use Discharge, Flamethrower and Thunder Punch to lure it to a clearing on the other side of the lake.

Once at the other end of the lake, Iris calls upon Excadrill and Axew, and with Dragonite and Emolga, Hydreigon is surrounded. Hydreigon goes to attack, but is countered by Excadrill's Focus Blast and Axew's Dragon Rage. Iris comes to the hill and jumps on Hydreigon, but fails. Ash and Cilan decide to help out, but the elder stops them. As the man watches, Iris attempts to calm Hydreigon again, but fails again. Axew tries to attack, but Iris stops him, telling him to act once she gives the sign. The elder thinks they should have some faith in Iris to calm Hydreigon down, as she aspires herself to become a Dragon Master. Iris gives the sign, so Excadrill and Axew use Focus Blast and Dragon Rage. Hydreigon is startled, so Iris jumps and grabs its head.

Hydreigon's other two heads bite Iris, but she relaxes, wanting Hydreigon to calm down. Hydreigon struggles, but Iris tells it that it there's no need to afraid, claiming that it evolved and got stronger. She continues on, saying that it needs to control its power and pats it, understanding its feelings. Finally, Hydreigon settles down, and Shannon hugs Iris.. Ash, Cilan and the elder are all impressed by Iris' skill, as the latter didn't doubt Iris' faith in her Pokémon. However, the man does not trust Iris. Iris asks why is he here, so the elder replies that this man, Drayden, came because he heard Iris was getting stronger and passing through the village. Drayden admits that he saw Iris has grown a bit, but wants to test her out, telling he will be waiting at Opelucid Gym.

Cilan remembers that the man was Drayden, Opelucid City's Gym Leader. Shannon asks the elder that, once her other Zweilous evolves, for permission to go on a journey. The elder replies that she was waiting for this question, starting that everyone, including Shannon and Iris, have a talent. However, the elder reminds Shannon that she needs to choose and carve out a path and go on it. Iris is glad about them and decides to challenge Drayden.
