After winning the Freeze Badge from Brycen, Ash and co. head to the location of the final Gym in Unova, Opelucid City. However, he learns that the Gym there is closed so he'll have to go somewhere else. Just then Ash and co. are abducted by a butler who asks for Cilan a favor: to find the right partner Pokémon for his bosses cute little daughter (emphasis on cute and little). Cilan's was but one opinion, the other is to another A-Class Connoiseur named Pinot Noir, who has a Pokémon Cilan dreads most: A Purrloin. Which opinion of these two is more correct, and will Cilan get over whatever happened between him and Purrloin? And with the Opelucid Gym closed, where will Ash go for his final badge?

The heroes are headed to Opelucid City. However, Nurse Joy comes out and informs them the Gym will be closed until further notice. Iris thinks that is awesome, but takes her words back. Suddenly, they are visited by an man, who is looking for Cilan. Cilan is taken aback by this man's appearance, who throws him, Ash and Iris into the limousine. Cilan wonders what is all this about, so the man replies there is a person called Mr. Hatterly, who needs the Pokémon Conniseur skills on a certain matter. Ash and Iris think they can be in the town for a while, since Opelucid Gym is closed anyways. Burgundy kicks a gate, annoyed she can't enter. She suddenly sees Cilan in the limo, wondering why is he here.
After Ash’s victory in the Iccirus City Gym, he and his friends are about to get on their way to Opelucid City and Ash’s final Gym battle. Just as they leave the Pokemon Center, Nurse Joy appears and asks if they’re going to the Opelucid City Gym. The note in her hand says that the Opelucid Gym has been closed, much to Ash’s dismay. Iris expresses joy at the news, which baffles Ash. Suddenly, a luxury limousine rolls up behind them and a butler with a red suit and ponytail steps out. He asks Ash if he is "the A-class Connoisseur Cilan", Iris points out the real Cilan. The butler picks up Cilan like a child and throws him in the back of the limo, saying that he has an invitation from someone named Mr. Hattori. Cilan holds his bumped head as his friends protest this abuse, but the butler says that they are all invited and throws them in as well.

The butler explains that Mr. Hattori, a "very prominent citizen" from Stonesthrow Town, has requested a skilled Pokémon Connoisseur and sought Cilan as his first pick.

Upon their arrival, they once again confront Burgundy, who is banging on the entrance gate and demanding entry. The butler in the limo explains that she access denied because of her C-class rating, much to her outrage.

Mr. Hattori’s butler enters a dark room with Cilan and his friends. Spotlights turn on and illuminate Cilan and a man in flashy clothing. The butler introduces him as Ricard Nouveau, another A-class Pokémon Connoisseur. Ricard details the significance of being an A-class Connoisseur as he walks over to and greets Cilan. As they exchange hands, Ricard says that he has heard of Cilan’s skill, but sniffs his hand and reveals that he "reeks of inexperience." The butler introduces Mr. Hattori, who is the father of the girl named Marigold. Marigold bows and coyly escapes behind her father. Mr. Hattori has the curtains opened in full, allowing the gardens outside to be seen. Ash and Iris run outside and see a Petilil and a Whimsicott, each of which Ash scans on his Pokedex. Mr. Hattori begins to say that it is almost time for his daughter to have her first Pokémon, one that is as exceptional as she is. This is why he has invited the two Connoisseurs: to pick out the perfect first partner for Marigold. Ricard has no problem with this, but Cilan reminds him that a Pokémon Connoisseur’s job is to "choose, raise, and recommend a Pokémon’s moves" and that they must first get to know the client, Marigold. Cilan asks her what Pokémon she plays with in the garden, but she turns away and hides behind her father out of fear, but Cilan catches a scent from her as she does so. Mr. Hattori says that Marigold is friends with all the Pokémon.

The man tells them Mr. Hatterly needs an A-class conniseur. Burgundy is insulted, as she is C-class. The man replies he does not need services from a C-class and they drive off, making Burgundy mad and sad she is left out. Meanwhile, a girl plays on a swing and is called by her father. The girl leaves her Pokémon and meets up with her father, who reports a Conniseur is coming and they should meet him. The heroes come into the mansion and the man thanks Cilan for coming, though presents another A-class conniseur, Ricard Noveau, who meets him. Ricard has heard of Cilan and admits he may look like a Conniseur, but smells inexperience. Cilan is slightly distrubed, but tells Ash and Iris this is how Conniseurs meet each other.
Suddenly a rustling bush appears and reveals an elderly man. The man reacts in contempt and announces himself as Fauxgundy, the "legendary S-class Pokémon Connoisseur." He holds up a badge as proof of his superior rank. Mr. Hattori and his butler both apologize, but Cilan finds something strange. Fauxgundy walks over to Marigold to show them all how he would do it. Fauxgundy begins to sniff Marigold all over, which freaks her out. He ignores him and begins to sniff the Pokémon in the garden, reviewing Petilil, Whimsicott, Sewaddle, Deerling, and Blitzle before settling on a Lillipup. He brings it over and claims that Lillipup is Marigold’s favorite Pokémon because it smells like her shampoo. But Mr. Hattori explains that he had used Marigold’s shampoo on Lillipup. Lillipup snatches Fauxgundy’s badge just as Cilan asks to see it again, and Lillipup begins to lick the badge, revealing that the S-class mark was just a sticker covering a C-class mark and the Fauxgundy turns out to be a Burgundy. The butler wastes no time in removing her from the premises.

Mr. Hatterly and her daughter, Marigold, appear. Cilan asks why are they here, so Mr. Hatterly has the curtains removed, revealing a garden with a Petilil and a Whimsicott. Mr. Hatterly lets them know Marigold will soon receive her first Pokémon, but help is needed to choose the right one from his garden. Cilan and Ricard confirm a Conniseur's job is to detect which Pokémon is suitable for a trainer, though Cilan wants to ask Marigold some questions first. He asks her does she have a specific Pokémon she plays with, but Marigold is too shy. Suddenly, a man appears out of a bush, scolding Cilan's question. The butler restrains the man, Fogundy, who demands to be freed, claiming he is "the Legendary S-class Conniseur".
Ricard says that Marigold needs a Pokémon as lovely, stylish, and graceful as her. He walks through the garden, observing all the aforementioned Pokémon, as well as Swanna, a female Frillish, Minccino, and Patrat. Ricard picks up Petilil and decides that the Grass-type would suit Marigold perfectly, but Marigold is uneasy about this choice. Mr. Hattori asks Cilan if he agrees, but he says that neither Petilil or Lillipup is not a good match for Marigold, to her apparent relief. The two Connoisseurs begin to argue, but they accept Mr. Hattori’s suggestion to decide this with a Pokémon battle.

Cilan asks why did Fogundy claim him to be naive. Fogundy replies he can't evaluate by asking questions. Instead, Fogundy smells Marigold, scaring her, though Fogundy claims to know better. She smells some Pokémon and thinks Lillipup is her favorite, because it has the smell just like her. Cilan thinks Fogundy's deduction is flawed. Mr. Hatterly confirms that, for he actually bathed Lillipup using Marigold's shampoo. Cilan and Ricard are interested in Fogundy, as they never heard of a Conniseur like him. They demand him to show the document. However, Lillipup snatches that and plays it a bit, which is actually a sticker showing a C-rank. The man starts fighting with Lillipup and in the end, reveals to be Burgundy. Soon, she is carried away by the butler.
Cilan stands at one end of a battlefield on the estate grounds and thinks deeply about the scent he smelled earlier. He relates it to a sprawling meadow with a gentle breeze and deducts that it must have come from a Grass Pokémon. Using his nose as his guide, he finds the swing set and discovers a powder on one of the seats. Ash and Iris approach and remind him that his battle is about to start.

Cilan still has questions for Marigold, but Ricard tells the question time is over and they need to pick the Pokémon matching Marigold's personality. Ricard searches a bit and finds a Petilil and a Whimsicott. Cilan denies, thinking neither are worthy of Marigold, making her relieved. Ricard asks what does Cilan think, but he is not certain. Ricard claims Cilan just wants to disagree with him, so Mr. Hatterly proposes a battle and the winner will decide which Pokémon suits Marigold the best. Later, Cilan traces his steps back, realizing he detected a smell of a grass-type Pokémon, but with slightly different characteristics. He knows that from among all Grass-type Pokémon, Sewaddle and Deerling are the perfect candidates, but still feels there is something else about it.
Before the two Connoisseurs begin to battle, Mr. Hattori thinks that Petilil is great for his daughter, so Ricard should win. In the bushes, a persistent Burgundy observes the high-ranking standoff. On the battlefield, his butler acts as referee and officially begins the one-on-one battle between Ricard and Cilan. Ricard chooses his prize Pokémon Purrloin, much to Cilan's fear. He then chooses his Crustle, but Ricard says that using a Bug/Rock-type against his Dark-type Purrloin is something a C-class would do, which infuriates Burgundy. Cilan makes the first move with X-Scissor, but Purrloin easily dodges, surprising Cilan with its speed. Ricard explains that his Purrloin’s speed and power is even greater than its evolved form, Liepard. Purrloin uses Sand-Attack right at Crustle’s eyes and then Fury Swipes on its head.

  +
He smells the scent again and it leads him to Marigold's swing. Ash and Iris come, reminding Cilan about the battle, who asks them for a favor. Burgundy observes Cilan's and Ricard's battle, as they send their Pokémon. Ricard sends Purrloin, scaring Cilan, who sends Crustle. Cilan tells Ricard the Conniseur should know how to raise Pokémon and know when to use the right moves. Ricard replies even a C-conniseur knows that, annoying Burgundy at that. Crustle attacks with X-Scissor, but misses, for Purrloin is fast. Purrloin retaliates with Sand-Attack, then hits it with Fury Swipes. Mr. Hatterly thinks Marigold's first Pokémon will be Petilil, displeasing her. While Ash and Iris are searching, Ricard lets Cilan know a Conniseur has to have unpredictable qualities.
While Ricard criticizes Cilan’s battle style as boring and predictable, Ash and Iris snoop around the gardens, looking for something. Cilan responds to Ricard accordingly and calls for Shell Smash. Purrloin flies at Crustle with a Night Slash prepared, but Crustle vanishes into thin air. With its now-incredible speed, Crustle has evaded the attack and ended up facing Purrloin’s backside. Cilan seizes the opportunity and orders Rock Wrecker, which hits Purrloin with force (it also smacks Burgundy, who was hiding in the bush to watch the battle, blasting her away from the estate).

  +
Crustle uses Shell Smash, while Purrloin attacks with Nightslash. However, Crustle dodges and retaliates with Rock Wrecker, defeating Purrloin. The attack also hits Burgundy, blasting her off, which Ash hears. Ricard calls Purrloin back and admits Crustle is a magnificent Pokémon that Cilan raised well. Cilan tells Mr. Hatterly he has already decided what Pokémon should Marigold have, based on her personality. He also knows Marigold has befriended the Pokémon, surprising Ricard and Mr. Hatterly. Ash and Iris come, so Cilan points out they carry Marigold's new Pokémon, a Foongus. Mr. Hatterly and Ricard are disappointed, while Cilan lets them know he smelled a scent, but not of any Pokémon around the garden.
With Purrloin defeated by a single blow, Cilan wins the battle and the choice of Marigold’s first Pokémon. Cilan says that her starter Pokémon should match her unique character, not her style and grace. He goes on to theorize that she has already made a strong connection with one Pokémon in particular. He reveals that his recommendation for Marigold is Foongus. Marigold runs over to it and they embrace each other lovingly. Cilan supports his theory with the scent he picked up, which was indeed that of a Grass-type Pokémon, but also had properties of a Poison-Type. Marigold tells the story of how Foongus came to her one day as she was sitting on the swing set alone. Foongus joyfully joined her on the seat and pushed them by expelling powder, which filled the area as the two swung and had fun. She never told her father because she thought that he wouldn’t approve. He goes over and assures her that he would be happy with any Pokémon she chose, and father and daughter hug.

  +
Marigold confirms Cilan's facts, as Foongus visited her one day and started playing with her. However, she did not tell anything, fearing her father will not approve of her choice. Mr. Hatterly is still pleased about her choice. Ricard admits Cilan is victorious, but next time will be different, which Cilan is eager to wait. Cilan thanks them for a wonderful time, but Marigold thanks back for finding a Pokémon that suits her. The butler advises Ash to go to Virbank City, since there is a Gym there. Cilan is very interested in that, so Ash allows it, aiming to challenge Virbank City's Gym Leader. With that, the heroes ride off in the limousine, waving goodbye to Mr. Hatterly, Marigold and their butler.
Marigold thanks Cilan for helping her, and promises to take care of Foongus as she becomes a Trainer and goes off on her own journey. The butler states that the gym in Virbank City would be a great idea for Ash's eighth badge. Ash and his friends are driven out of the estate by limo and plan to go down the river to their next stop, Virbank City, where Ash’s eighth Unova Gym badge awaits.
