Naming
An articuno's name is a cross of the words arctic and uno, the Spanish word for one. The second part of its name indicates that it is the first in the series of Kanto's Legendary Birds.
Its Japanese name is simply Freezer, "one that freezes".
Biological characteristics
The articuno is a large bird with blue plumage. Its coloring is darkest on its head crest and long, streaming tail. Its body is colored sky-blue, while growing lighter on its front. Its most distinctive trait is its large wings, which are said to be made of ice.
In the video games
First generation
There is only one in Red/Blue/Yellow versions. It waits on the lowest level of the Seafoam Islands for a worthy challenger.
Second generation
The only way to get one in Gold/Silver/Crystal is to trade one from a First Generation version.
Fourth generation
The only way to obtain one in Diamond/Pearl is to migrate one from a GBA version through Pal Park.
