Plot

Ash is battling a trainer. The opponent's Scizor attacks with Fury Cutter. Torkoal counters with Flamethrower, but misses. Scizor uses Hyper Beam, but fails when Torkoal used Iron Defense. Scizor tries with Metal Claw, but is defeated by Torkoal's Overheat. Ash wins and sends Torkoal back to Poké Ball. The opponent thanks Ash for such a battle. A man overhears them, strangely enough. Team Rocket is seen to be working in a restaurant, with not much money and no sign of the gang either. They begin to imagine their life on an island. A man enters (the same one who heard the gang), demanding some food as good as the man who worked here before. The man wants a glass of milk with peppermint, strangely to Team Rocket.

The gang spots a restaurant. They sit for a table and comment on Ash's previous battle. Ash thinks the previous opponent was not the best one, so thinks that he should battle a better one, thinking he'll have one soon enough. James comes to serve them, having a shocked face and goes back. He tells it to Jessie and Meowth, so Jessie thinks they should capture Pikachu. Mewoth thinks they should get rid of the man first, as he'll pound them blasting off if he sees them fighting near the restaurant. Brock asks May which Pokémon should she use in next Contest, but she has not yet decided.

The man comes and says she needs to decide carefully. Max realizes that it is Drake from the Elite Four of Hoenn. He compliments Ash's skills when he saw Torkoal battle Scizor. The gang introduces themselves. Drake invites them to a ride in his boat, to which everyone agrees. Jessie comes to get aboard, but James pulls her down, so they plan to capture Pikachu... carefully. Drake compliments the milk he had, so agrees that they come with him. They wait for a while, when a giant ship arrives. They get aboard, seeing the huge deck of the ship. Max asks Drake to show his Pokémon, so instead Drake challenges Ash to a battle, to which he agrees to. Team Rocket are thrilled by this opportunity.

Drake sends Shelgon and Ash his Pikachu. Pikachu starts with Thunderbolt, electrocuting Shelgon. Pikachu does it one more time, but Shelgon moves away and uses Double Edge. Pikachu dodges with Quick Attack. Everyone is worrying as Drake's strategy seems weak, though a member of Drake's crew tells them to be patient. Pikachu uses Iron Tail, but unexpectedly, Shelgon uses Dragon Breath, canceling the attack and uses Dragon Claw, defeating Pikachu. Ash holds Pikachu, who will recover. A member of crew tells the gang that Drake waited to Pikachu to come to him before attacking.

The next round begins. Drake sends Altaria and Ash his Grovyle. The member of the crew predicts that Grovyle will jump from the masts as if it were trees. He says that Drake knows well how powerful Ash is, otherwise he wouldn't invite him. Grovyle jumps against the masts and attacks with Bullet Seed, but Altaria evades. Next, Grovyle goes to use Leaf Blade, but does not see Altaria. Altaria sneaks behind and attacks with Take Down. Next, Altaria knocks Grovyle out with Dragon Breath. Drake gives Ash advice that he should clear his mind from idle thoughts to win. Altaria uses Sky Attack, but with Ash's concentration, Grovyle uses Quick Attack, so Altaria misses. Grovyle attacks with Leaf Blade, but Altaria used Aerial Ace to dodge and then uses Solar Beam. Grovyle is defeated. Drake sees the defeated Grovyle and says Ash should take it to the Pokémon Center, although its wounds are not severe.

Drake also tells Ash that he almost defeated Altaria when he emptied his mind. Drake offers them to come to dinner. Jessie gives drink to May, to which she accepts, but soon Pikachu is taken and soon Team Rocket takes off their disguises. Drake is not happy by the fact Pikachu has been taken, so sends Salamance. Salamance attacks with Dragon Claw, bashing the balloon and freeing Pikachu. The balloon is blasted off when Salamance used Flamethrower. That night, everyone is having dinner. Everyone is amazed by the food, as Drake tells them it makes the trainers stronger. Drake tells them he was similar to Ash - he was confident he was unbeatable, but kept losing. Then he realizes that it was his overconfidence, so tells Ash that it is not everything in winning and losing, but what the trainer learns from it, as long as he is not arrogant. Ash heeds the advice and will try his best.

Trivia

  • Featured Pokémon: Pikachu, Wingull, Torkoal, Manectric
  • This episode was initially intended to be the 102nd episode of the Advanced Generation series and the 376th episode of the Pokémon anime, but was moved up in the schedule due to strong earthquakes in Niigata Prefecture nearly a week before the airing of AG100. For the skipped episode, see AG101 (unaired).
  • The title is a pun on the fashion magazine "Vanity Fair".
  • This episode marks the only time a member of the Hoenn Elite Four appears in the anime.

Errors

  • After Scizor has dodged Torkoal's Flamethrower, it lands for a second and jumps for more speed. But when it leaves the screen, its foot gets stuck on the corner of the screen, even though Brock's, Max's and May's faces can be seen moving after this, clearly following Scizor.
